Jensen Huang visits Beijing

On April 17, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang landed in Beijing, invited by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT).

According to anonymous sources speaking to FT, Huang's schedule included meetings with:

  • State Council Vice Premier He Lifeng
  • DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng, during which the two talked about how Nvidia can make a new type of chip that meets the needs of Chinese customers while complying with US regulations

ICYDK: The Trump administration has recently informed Nvidia that their H20 chip, which was designed exclusively to conform to US regulations on chip sales to China, could not be sold to China.

  • The ban will reportedly cost Nvidia USD 5.5 billion.

We have questions: If the new chip talk is true, where is Huang getting the confidence to invest in yet another China-focused product, when the US government could simply ban its export once it's complete?

  • Did Trump promise him Nvidia's next China-facing product wouldn't face export restrictions?

The bigger picture: US policy appears to be leaning towards forcing countries and companies to pick a side.

  • Nvidia seems disinclined to do so.
